ALLOTMENT LOCATIONS : BURPHAM
Bowers Lane, Burpham
Size: 66 plots – mainly 10 rod but some 5 rods.
Burpham is an open flat site, nestling in Bowers Lane, with the River Wey on two sides and the third side adjacent to the Nature Reserve. The site has excellent security fencing all around the perimeter with padlocked main gates. There are 66 plots mainly full sized (approx 10 rod) , with a few split into half sized plots. All the plots are individually wire fenced , each with its own gate. The soil is easily workable loam but can dry out very easily. Ideal for most fruit, veg and flowers if kept fertilised and watered. Power machinery, strimmers, rotovators, mowers etc. can be borrowed from the wardens. Pre booking is advisable. The wardens are all unpaid volunteers with their own plots to look after and may not always be available to provide access to machinery at all times.
There is easy access for vehicles and pedestrians directly from Bowers Lane and there is ample on site parking. Water stand pipe taps are spaced around the site with most taps being shared by 4 or 5 plots, allowing handheld hosepipes for watering , although sprinklers and such like are not permitted. Ladies and gents flushing toilets and washbasins are available during the summer months.
Burpham is a friendly site with plenty of help and advice available for novice gardeners. There is a community shed and garden for communal events such as summer barbecues and winter bonfires. Community spirit and involvement is encouraged and all tenants are urged to come and help for an hour or so on our regular work parties to help keep the site tidy and a pleasant place to be. Every Wednesday there is a morning work party followed by 11 am coffee and chat and sometimes cake, at the community shed garden.
There are a couple of beehives,in their own area well away from the main plots , run by experienced beekeepers which ensures all produce is well pollinated.
The tenants at Burpham take great pride both in their own plots and the site overall, there are several Gold Medal Winners in the Guildford in Bloom Annual Contest, and one tenant has won the prestigious Best in Show Award as well as Best Allotment on several occasions.
New tenants who look after their plots will be warmly welcomed at Burpham.
