Giant Pumpkin grown at Burpham Site Raises Cash for Local Charity

A giant pumpkin grown by Mike Beckwith of our Burpham Site was put to good use by Challengers Charity for disabled children and young people. Mike donated the pumpkin, grown from seed from Thompson and Morgan on his allotment, and Challengers displayed it at Guildford’s Pop Up Village prior to Halloween for a ‘guess the weight of the pumpkin’ competition.

The pumpkin weighed in at 55 Kilos (121 pounds for the metrically challenged)

The nearest guess was 62 Kg from a happy chap called Dylan who won a Halloween Hamper kindly  donated to Challengers by a fundraisers mum.

The total raised was £102.38

The pumpkin as used afterwards by Challengers Preschool who drew on it, carved it and squished the pulp with their fingers , whilst learning all about how to grow and eat pumpkins.

Some seeds have been returned to the Burpham Site and it is hoped we will be able to run a Grow the Heaviest Pumpkin  competition next year so watch this space.
